| IBSSA Historic District Information |
Posted on Apr 5th, 2011
IBSSA Board was approached with proposition to have portions of our neighborhood placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Board has begun to identify the potential benefits and liabilities (if any) associated with being in such historic district. Inclusion requires a house to be at least 50 years old (there are lots of those) and be basically unaltered on the exterior. The government website has the entire list of criteria (links available on IBSSA website). Not all houses within IBSSA will qualify for the District.
Determining eligible homes is part of the application process. The application is submitted to the Department of State (DOS). Answers to frequently asked questions:
• There are no restrictions on the use, treatment, transfer, or disposition of private property.
• A property will not be listed if, for individual properties, the owner objects, or for districts, a majority of property owners object.
• National Register listing does not invoke local historic district zoning.
The Laurel Park neighborhood is a Historic District. The process took a little over 2 years
Total cost to the Laurel Park Neighborhood was around $20,000. IBSSA cost could be similar. Two funding avenues are available: funding by the City (long queue) or IBSSA fund raising. The latter could be quicker. Designation as a historic district communicates quality and value that translates into higher property values.
The neighborhoods input is much needed by the Board. Please post your views or send them reply privately to Vald Svekis at vsvekis@gmail.com .

| Pedestrian Safety Improvements along N. Trail |
Posted on Jan 4th, 2010
Construction to improve pedestrian safety at two major intersections along U.S. 41 will begin Mon., January 4, 2010 in the evening with minimal disruption to motorized traffic. The two intersections being improved are: U.S. 41 and 10 Street and U.S. 41 and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
The major construction will occur at night during off-peak traffic hours, Monday through Friday from 10pm to 6am. Since the construction is limited to pedestrian access, road closures are not expected; however, lane closures will be necessary. The intersections will be worked on simultaneously. The enhancements are scheduled to be completed by early March 2010.
The pedestrian safety improvements will include making sidewalks, curbs and ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Minor striping, gutter improvements and pedestrian signalization will also occur.
The improvements at 10th Street will remain in place until the long term changes associated with the City's Bayfront Connectivity study are designed and constructed.
